Men and Temptation

August 4, 2009

Our regular men’s groups continue to prove to be fruitful, encouraging and challenging. In light of the fact that life is war, yesterday and this morning we talked about how to battle temptation. Both meetings this week were filled with insight, laughter, sober contemplation,  and genuine care for one another.  Here a just a few of the helpful things shared as we discussed how we battle temptation:

  1. Remember the past consequences of giving in to sin, as well as remember the faithfulness of God to forgive us of past failures in the Gospel.
  2. Redirect or refocus on energy. It is often best escape temptation by putting our mind towards something else (and hopefully something productive)
  3. Undress the sin. Strip away all the false promises and veneer and see sin as it really is.
  4. Fight the promises of sin with the promises of Scripture (2Cor 10:4-5)
  5. Claim the reality that we have divine power to demolish strongholds (2Cor 10:4) in the Gospel. We do not have to capitulate to a culture of addictions.
  6. Flee.
  7. Pray. A lot.

These are just some of things we shared in our meetings this week. All of the meetings are open to men of all ages. Come and join us next week. Noon at Zaxby’s on East Brainerd Road. Or come Mon Aug 17 at Qdoba on Market St or Tues Aug 18 at 6:30am at Cracker Barrel on Shallowford.
