Yesterday at church we were reminded that God’s grace in Christ not only saves us, it trains us.  If Christianity is a house, grace isn’t received just to come through the front door but to walk through every room.  God’s undeserved kindness and love, secured through the cross, teaches us day in and day out to renounce ungodliness and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives as we wait to see Jesus (Titus 2:11-14).

Solomon understood our need to be trained by grace every day.  His benediction to Israel at the completion of the temple is a stunning foreshadowing of this gospel truth:

May [the Lord our God] not leave us or forsake us, that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways and to keep his statutes, and his rules, which he commanded our fathers….  May he maintain the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel, as each day requires (1 Kings 8:57-59).

I’ve joined Solomon is his prayer on behalf of Concord.  May the Lord incline our hearts to him today and maintain our cause, that we might train for godliness with all our might.
