Redirecting the Sports Spotlight

August 7, 2008

Two articles grabbed my attention today from the sports page. They come from opposite ends of the earth, and both have reminders for us. The first shows us how to humbly glorify Jesus in the face of personal praise. The second is a jaw dropping opportunity we should pray about during the Beijing Olympics.

Our pal CJ has a great post from the world of the NFL.

On Sunday, Washington Redskins legends Art Monk and Darrell Green were inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, OH. There was a lot of predictable pageantry, with a surprising twist in the speech by Monk.

What I most appreciated about Art Monk in his speech Sunday was his evident humility and love for the Savior, both of which were on full display.

Take some time to read the transcript excerpts on CJ’s blog. Wow.

Second, JT shared a surprising story about China distributing bilingual Bibles … IN THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE.

China will provide 10,000 free Chinese-English bilingual Bibles to be distributed in the Olympic Village where the Olympic athletes and media are housed, as reported by the China Daily newspaper. The bilingual Bible text will include the CUV (Chinese Union Version) and the ESV (English Standard Version), appearing in two side-by-side columns per page. The CUV Bible is the most widely distributed Chinese Bible in the world, and the ESV Bible has recently become the fastest growing English language Bible in the world.

In addition to the 10,000 bilingual CUV-ESV Bibles, 30,000 New Testaments and 100,000 bilingual editions of the four Gospels will also be made available at the Olympic Games.

What a reminder of how God goes before His people. Please remember to pray for China as the world’s eyes turn there over the next few weeks. Pray for the witness of believers and for open conversations about faith. May the gospel go forth with power!
