Getting Better

July 24, 2008

Is this the truth, or just a half-truth?  It’s worthy of pondering in light of the gospel:

The only people who get better are people who know that, if they never get better, God will love them anyway.

—Steve Brown, A Scandalous Freedom (West Monroe, LA: Howard Books, 2004), 68-69, from Of First Importance

My certainty: The gospel precedes moral improvement by liberating us from fear.  Through God’s love in Christ we are set free to grow in love for God and neighbor, no longer being afraid of condemnation.  I rejoice in this truth!

My question: But can a person truly have received God’s love in Christ and never get better?  What might a lack of sanctification imply about our professed faith?
